Getting coverage in your local media for your salon is not easy these days I’m afraid. Publications are operating on ever tightening budgets which means journalists increasingly favour those companies who advertise with them.
Get your salon press release noticed
- The basis of both a news report and a press release is the five Ws – What, Where, When, Who and Why.
- Summarise the essence of your story in the first paragraph using these five Ws.
- Avoid jargon, use plain English and keep to the facts.
- Include statistics to support your story if you have them.
- A picture speaks a thousand words so include a great photo if possible. And don’t forget a caption. “73% of reporters think press releases should include images”
- It is a good idea to use a quotation as the third or fourth paragraph to give your press release a human touch. “Salon owner James Smith said…”
- Keep it brief. Try to write no more than the one page.
- Include the date at the top of the release and the words “For Immediate Release”.
- Give your contact details and your salon website at the bottom of the release.
4. And finally, don’t make a nuisance of yourself and pester the journalist. If it’s a good story they’ll probably use it. But their priorities change and they may have a last minute great story which they use instead of yours.
